Reflecting on 2024 – A Year of Progress & Collaboration

As we approach the end of 2024, The Westwinds Communities Team reflects on a year of progress, collaboration, and dedication to improving affordable housing in the Foothills region.

One of the key highlights of the year was the grand opening of Drake Towns, a 10-unit affordable housing project in Okotoks. This development increased local affordable housing options and helped to address the needs of women fleeing violence and modest-income families. The project reflects what is possible through collaboration with all levels of government, local partners, and our dedicated team.

Another milestone was the transition of our Tenant Resource Coordinator role from pilot to permanent program. In just 10 months, this initiative managed 249 client referrals, offering support in areas like financial education, healthcare access, and crisis intervention. The program has helped tenants overcome challenges, prevent evictions, and maintain stable housing.

Supporting our team has been equally important. We focused on workplace safety, resilience, and well-being, introducing resources for effective communication, stress management, and work-life balance. Staff recognition programs were revamped, and our extraordinary employees tell us they feel their workplace is safe.

We also made strategic capital investments to improve properties and enhance the living environment for residents. Renovations, maintenance projects, and upgrades, including technological enhancements, reflect our commitment to sustainability and operational efficiency.

The national housing crisis remains an ongoing challenge, with rising costs and limited options impacting many Canadians, and we continue to advocate for towns like ours to ensure equitable access to these critical resources.

To ease the financial burden on renters, we adjusted our Rental Assistance Benefit to better reflect market conditions. With supplements ranging from $75 to $800 per month, this program has provided immediate, meaningful support to individuals and families.

Looking ahead, we are excited to celebrate our 65th anniversary in 2025, a milestone that reinforces our legacy of service to the communities in the Foothills. Our plans to develop up to 98 units of affordable and mixed-market housing in Okotoks will be at the forefront of our efforts as we continue working toward a future where everyone has access to safe, affordable housing.

Thank you to our residents, staff, partners, and community members for contributing to a year of accomplishments. Together, we are making a meaningful difference. Wishing you all a joyful holiday season and a prosperous new year.
