Affordable Housing Plays a Vital Role in Healthy Communities

A recent report from the Auditor General of Alberta examined over 27,000 housing units across 2,800 affordable housing facilities in the province. This audit was prompted by previous ministry reports indicating declining conditions in many properties. The findings highlight several challenges in assessing and managing the condition of provincially owned affordable housing. Westwinds recognizes these challenges as it operates 130 affordable housing units with an average age of 38 years.

Key challenges include inconsistent property conditions, the need for ongoing investment, and the importance of implementing effective maintenance strategies to ensure safe and comfortable living environments for residents.

Westwinds is pleased to see these critical needs recognized and prioritized. At Westwinds, we take pride in maintaining our tenants’ buildings in good to fair condition—a testament to the dedication and hard work of our exceptional maintenance team. Through regular inspections and timely repairs, we proactively address facility issues before they escalate, ensuring our properties remain safe and functional. By engaging directly with our residents and incorporating their feedback, we continuously refine our maintenance practices to better serve their needs.

The Auditor General’s report underscores the broader challenges facing the affordable housing sector, particularly the need for sustained capital investment to support timely repairs and long-term upkeep. We hope our proactive approach demonstrates that, even with limited resources, it is possible to provide quality housing.

Our commitment to providing safe, well-maintained homes remains steadfast. We believe that focusing on consistent maintenance improves living conditions and enhances community well-being. Westwinds will continue to invest in our properties and contribute to broader housing solutions across the province as opportunities arise.
