Housing Needs Assessment
Westwinds Communities is a not for profit organization providing affordable homes and services across communities in the Foothills County. We strive to provide housing options that ensure the safety, dignity and choices for more than 650 client households annually.
Westwinds Communities (WWC) is completing a Housing Needs Assessments in partnership with the Towns of Black Diamond and High River and Habitat for Humanity’s Foothills Chapter. This will be a comprehensive analysis of the need for affordable housing. It will look out five and ten years into the future. It will focus on low and moderate income households in the rental and sale markets in Black Diamond and High River.
The Housing Needs Assessments will support developing affordable housing in Black Diamond and High River. After they are complete, each community may create an affordable housing strategy. This aligns with recent provincial affordable housing recommendations. Municipalities were encouraged to develop housing and homelessness needs assessments and action plans.
Engagement for this project will help us verify and add to the quantitative data on housing needs. We hope to share stories and experiences of the communities to help holistically address housing needs.
How you can get involved
We are hosting a series of engagement events for you to be included in this important project. The purpose of the engagement events is to:
▪ Ground the development of the housing needs assessment in local knowledge and the needs of the community;
▪ Learn from residents’ lived experiences with affordable housing; and
▪ Learn from housing and service providers in the area.
We are hosting workshops, surveys and interviews to help inform this work.
We are working with community partners to invite people to participate in interviews so we can learn more about people’s lived experiences with homelessness and living in emergency shelter and transitional housing.
People participating in interviews will receive a gift certificate to a local business for their participation.
Closing the Loop
After we complete our engagement events, we will analyze the information from them. After this is done, we will host a close the loop event to let you know what we heard. This will be scheduled at a later date. Participants in each of our engagement events will be asked if they want to receive an invitation to this virtual event. The event will also be recorded for viewing later.
